In Czernowitz the German language was tolerated until 1926.
Then only Rumanian was in official use.
This created serious problems to many who did not know the
language.
I was born in 1932 and so I was a Rumanian. By birth.
Older people had to apply for citizenship and pass language exams.
Until now I do not understand how people passed this exam without
knowing the essentials of Rumanian.
Like my parents.
I went to a rumanian kindergarten ,bald headed and wearing a
smock and a tricolor bow tie.
Every morning we sang the rumanian anthem:
"Long live the King ,in peace and honor,
Loving of the country, and defender of the land."
How we loved Carol our King !
I specially loved his helmet with the horse tail.
At night I dreamt I had such a helmet and wore it going
up and down the Russischegasse making everybody
go green with envy !!
Then at the kindergarten we sang such inspiring songs
like the ballad of the lost handkerchief which went like this :
"Mi-am pierdut batista - tra-la -la -la la ,
(I lost my handkerchief).
Vai , daca mama ar sti asta !
( If my mother found out,
this line was sung with your palm on your cheek).
Vai daca mama ar sti asta !
( change of hand and cheek side)
Tra-la-la-la-
(Sung very sadly - mother has found out)
