Here lived the Jews in old Czernowitz.
Around the Shiln and Cheders and markets.
The houses so low the doors opened into the streets.
With time the houses sank even lower or so it seems..
In 2006 I was there, an old Babushka was standing in a doorway.
She had Jewish eyes .
I asked her :" Dus Yiddische Spitul ?"
She looked at me in amazement and made a gesture with
her palm moving down.
The meaning is universal.
