Talk about communists. How about Anna Pauker. Her father was a very pious Jew.
She came to such prominence  as a communist  that in the course of the war she
was exchanged between the waring sides to Russia. After the war become the Prime
Minister of Roumania.

On Communists - I recall only two references - in Mamaia, near Constanta
one summer there was much hushed talk by the tourists about two
young Communists who had stolen a small sailboat and escaped the authorities.
They sailed to Russia.  The general talk was supportive of them and people
wished them luck.  There was no understanding of the danger of totalitarianism.

The second item that comes from memory was a joke.
Herr Meyer, do you know that your son is a Communist?
Of course, I know.  He is 20 years old.  If he had not become a
Communist by this age I would have disowned him.  If he is still a
Communist at 27 I will disown him then.
