[Cz-L] Re: Joseph Schmidt

I think my information is not accurate, because in my family tree I do
not have a Wolf Schmidt.
But I am interested in trying to find out the precise relationship
with the singer Josef Schmidt.
My mother, Rosa Schmidt, who passed away in 1990, told me that she was
definitely a relative of Josef Schmidt, and met him a few times only,
because they lived in different towns.
My mother lived in Waskuwutz (Vascauti), a small town near Czernowitz.
She told me Josef was rather shy (did not talk much) and she
remembered very much his striking little height.

My mothers parents where Jacob Schmidt and Lotti Mechlowicz.
My grand father Jacob had 5 Schmidt brothers, and one sister: Josef,
Isidor (also Srul or Israel), Moishe, Pelet, Itsik and Feigue Lea.
This Josef, then, probably is another Josef Schmidt, not the singer.
Most of their descendants live now in Israel.

If the singer's father is for sure Wolf Schmidt, then maybe Josef, the
singer, was a second cousin of my mother.
Her grand father was Schloime Yuda and her grand mother was Schmidt,
but all their sons carried the Schmidt last name.

I would like to find out more about the link, so if anyone in the
Cornell list has information, I would be very thankful to let me know.
Also if anyone knows about other families from Vascauti, would be interesting.

About Ms Weissmann questions:
I can speak and read in German. I learned to speak German with my
parents as a child, but never learned grammar. So I am completely
illiterate in German, but understand almost everything.
My aunt, Ani Schmidt, lives in Budapest, and must be around 80. She is
the daughter of Isidor Schmidt and has 2 daughter's living in NY and I
am sending copies here for one of them.

I also have a cousin, Eliezer Schmidt, now 69 years old, living in
Asdot, Isarel. His father was a Chemical Engineer, also named Josef
Schmidt, which I am coping here if they have information or interest
in this.
