Hi Anny,
Isiu Fuhrmann was my great uncle and had two brothers, Gary and Mordko
and a sister, Schöne (Shany). I believe that he was the second child.
His parents were Samuel Fuhrmann and Hannah Fuhrmann. Hannah was
Samuel’s second wife and she was widowed quite young and left with 7
or 8 children to raise.
Isiu was a watchmaker and goldsmith. He left Czernowitz in 1929 and
went to Curacao. There he met Wolf Spritzer, another Jewish
watchmaker and went to work in his small shop. Together they built a
jewelry business that eventually grew to 33 retail outlets and
boutiques in Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire and St. Maarten and NYC. Isiu
changes his name to Charles Fuhrmann and married his partner’s
daughter, Frieda. You can read his official bio here:
http://books.caribseek.com/Curacao/Commercial_History_of_Curacao/profiles/charles-fuhrmann.shtml
Isiu had two daughters with Frieda and last year we found out that he
also had at least another daughter with someone else. According to
those who knew him this was an open secret, but not so open that my
mother or other family members ever mentioned it to anyone of my
generation.
I hope I don’t offend anyone when I say that Isiu wasn’t a nice man.
He was very narcissistic. Lucca knew him in Curacao and can certainly
add more since she knew him as an adult and I only have a child’s
recollection.
Warmest regards,
Linda Hutkin Slade
