I cannot be sure, but it looks as if these are Austrian soldiers getting
ready to hang a local non-military man. In the background can be seen the
Italianate palace of the Wonder-Rabbi. He and his family lived in great
splendor and affluence, while the Jews, Ruthenians and Romanians of this
"Shtetel" lived in poverty. Now people make a big fuss over the "Rhuziner",
In Czernowitz, he was mostly considered a crook, who made money by selling
amulets to ignorant, poor people.
