A wonderful story, Arthur. And I love your epilogue.

(By the way, according to my Russian dictionary, a "molodets" is a brave
man!)

Dear Joanna,
I believe that I carved my name on the wooden column in cellar when I was
send down to fetch firewood. Or when I would sneak down to take one of
those juicy apples which my grandmother kept in straw for the winter months.
I do not remember what knife I used as I did not have (ein Taschenmesser) a
pocket knife. I was too young.
When I showed the lady my name carved in that wooden column the lady opened
her mouth, but no sound came out. I believe that she stopped breathing and
no sound came out. She stood there with her mouth open for a long time and
as we walked up the stairs she kept on whispering, “eto nevozmoshno, eto
nevozmoshno, staraye babushka” this is impossible, this is impossible, old
grandmother. I kept on telling her, not to worry, I have no desire to take
away your house. The only person who really enjoyed this was my taxi
driver, he just could not stop laughing and when he took me back to the
hotel he would not take any money from me. He kept on saying "molodets,
molodets" you are great, you are great, and shaking his head and laughing.

Arthur
