This is with respect to various references to military training. I was at Yiddish Middle School No.3, during 1944 (a shorter term from March to June), and also for most of the school year 1944-1945. Stanger might have brought gas masks, but our military training was supervised by the "voyenruk" (voyennyi rukovoditel) or military leader, a Jewish (starshyi leitenant) senior lieutenant named Kapeliushnik. He got this assignment away from the front, because he had been wounded, and unfit for active duty. We exercised with wooden rifles, and were only shown a real one, to study the loading and dismantling of the 90/31 standard Soviet army rifle. I have sent a picture of our 10-th grade class including the voyenruk to Steven Lasky's virtual museum.
Speaking of things military, being that we were most of us, 17 or 18 years old, during the summer of 1945 we had to be employed, since the Soviet authorities were taking fit looking youngsters who were not working, off the streets to forced labor in the Donbas coalmines.
