I remeber only one Schmidt & Fontin in the Hauptstrasse somewhere near the
Pfarrgasse. It was owned by Germans, and after 1933, we did not buy there
anything, since the owners were considered Antisemites, like many of the
Germans of Czernowitz. At the end of the Franzensgasse was a German
orphanage and their schoolchildren crossed every morning the Balschgasse
where I lived, on their way to the German school in the Althgasse, I went
the same way to reach the L3 Gymnasiun located near the Austria Platz and
often had to fight them, since they attacked me. They were many and I was
alone, but I have made it annd am still here.
