Re: [Cz-L] Katzenellenbogen and Ellenbogen

The founder of the family of Katzenellenbogen was Meir Ben Isaac, who was
born in a town by the name Katzenellenbogen in about 1482. He served as
rabbi in Padua and was a great Talmudic scholar. He is considered to be a
descendant of Rashi.

One of his descendants was Samuel Judah, born in Padua and served as rabbi
in Venice. He was considered the greatest rabbinical authority of his time
and it is believed that his friendship with Prince Radziwill of Poland,
secured the latter's protection of the Jews in Poland.

Another famous Katzenellenbogen was, Saul Ben Joseph. Born in Brest-Litovsk
ca. 1770. He was a disciple of the Gaon of Wilna and served as assistant
rabbi in Wilna.

I do not know who the first person to change his name from Katzenellenbogen
to Ellenbogen was, but the Ellenbogen are also a rabbinic family.
