I am translating a bio about Gedalya Gurman (born in Uman; a singer and also
a cantor) who was captured by the Nazis while he was in Czernowitz in the
summer of 1941.
It says that they went to his apartment and took him away to the
Czernowitzer Kultur-Palate (which translate out to Culture-Ward, palate
meaning (hospital ward), and then to the Prut where he was killed.
What is the Czernowitzer Kultur-Palate? How would we say this place in
English?
Thanks.
Regards,
Steven Lasky
