Elementary school is an appropriate term. In Yiddish, the term "folkshul"
was used for a four year elementary school (in urban areas) or a five-year
school program in rural areas.

Subject: [Cz-L] Folkshul
There are only a few of the biographies of native Czernowitzers listed in
the Lexicon of the Yiddish theatre left to translate, so hopefully within
the next few weeks I will announce it and provide all of you with a webpage
of links to these translations.
I have lately been taking it upon myself to also begin translating
biographies (not of Cz'ers) and to date in all there have been over one
hundred (of 2,700!) biographies translated.
>From time to time I have problems finding the English translation for some
words, even with Weinreich's Yiddish-English Dictionary. Since there were a
number of folkshuln in Czernowitz, I was wondering if you can give me a
proper translation of the word to use. I've seen it translated simply as
"public school" and "elementary school", i.e. here in the US one goes to
elementary schools from approximately five years of age until age ten. One
can always use "folk school" too, but I think the proper translation might
be public or elementary school. What is your opinion?
Thanks.

Steven Lasky
