Hello, Hardy

Here's what I know..

My father's mother was named Rosa (Rose) Barth. She was born, presumably in
Chernowitz, in 1885. I know that she grew up there. She had 2 brothers, Max
and Heisig (Isaac). On Rose's shipping record (found in Ancestry.com) she
says that Heisig lived at Berggasse 2 in Chernowitz...She arrived in the US
in 1908, at the age of 23. I have absolutely no idea what the names of her
parents were. There are numberous descendants, but nobody seems to know.

She supposedly had 3 stepbrothers and a stepsister---the oldest of these
stepbrothers was Joseph Meyers, my future grandfather, who she married in New
York.

His side is even more elusive...I had always heard that his entire family
was from Chernowitz----however, when I found HIS shipping record, also on
Ancestry.com, he had written Zagar as his birthplace...We found Zagar on a
map---it's a tiny town in the middle of Transylvania. We also went there on
a recent visit to Romania....picture Annatevka minus the Jews!

I could only conclude from this that his parents were from Zagar, rather
than Chernowitz, since I can't imagine that she was just driving by and
stopped long enough to deliver her baby!! I think that my
great-grandparernts and their first child moved to Chernowitz, where they
proceeded to have 3 more children.

Supposedly, my great-grandfather died at some point....none of the
descendants that I know have been able to dredge up his name....The last
name was Meier, or Meyer, or Myer....it became Meyers in the USA...some
folks have said that my great-grandfather may have been Shmuel, or Schmuel,
or Solomon.

SHE, on the other hand, is both more and less elusive...Her name was Leah
(or Lena) Meyer...or Leah Pilpel, which is what her grandchildren called
her.

This is what happened: the above-mentioned great-grandmother, Mrs. Barth,
died and Joseph Meyer's mother, Leah, met and married Mr. Barth. Thus the
Barth and Meyers children became step-siblings...

When Joseph Meyers and his siblings came to the USA in their twenties, their
mother came with them...The families all settled in the Utica, NY, area.

What I've never been able to understand is why, if Leah Meyers had married
Mr. Barth, she wasn't then identified as Mrs. Barth....But US census records
show her as Leah Meyer.....Whenever I asked my Aunt (her granddaughter)
where the "Pilpel" came from---was she an early feminist who had retained
her maiden name? Had she, in fact, ever really been married----to
anyone?---my aunt would clamp up and tell me that I was nosy!

Well, of course, I AM nosy, which is why I'm doing this research.

By now, I'm sure I've confused you, for which I apologize...I have seen
Barths in the photos of the Chernowitz cemetary, but since I don't know the
great-grandparents' first names, i have no idea if any of them are my
relatives.....

Anything you could do to provide enlightment would be very much appreciated!

Best regards, Judith Meyers Baker
