Czernowitzers! I am sending this after receiving the Feb 28 dated copy of
"The Jerusalem Report". Some months ago after what I felt was a not fully
accurate report on the Ukraine I contacted Eeta -Prince Gibson, the editor.
My intention was to describe our list and to explain and describe what we
are doing in Czernowitz etc. I eventually received a nondescript reply and
then silence. Now..in the current issue is a report by the editor, from Lviv,
about "The Ludmer Fund aiming to highlight the history of the Jews Galicia
and Bukowina". The aims of this fund sound commendable (and Jerome, the
article speaks a lot about Podhayce!) The fund also brought this group to
Lviv. One of their aims "to restore all the cemeteries". BUT...the article
does not mention the work already being done in Czermnowitz,or the
establishment there of the Jewish Museum. It mentions a list of "famous
Galicianers" who surprise surprise, all seem to be Czernowitzers. IT also
states as a fact that"the Jews lived in a state of hateful harmony" with
their neighbours,in a tense anti-Semitic status quo". In some places...may
have been true....but certainly not in Czernowitz and other Austrian areas.
There is an implication that all synagogue were destroyed...maybe they
should go to Rav Kofmanski's shul established in 1927 and still
functioning!!..The magazine website....www.jerusalemreport.com read it
for yourselves,I assume it will be there. And maybe some of our Iraelbased
list can talk to the editor and convince her that there are some positive
happenings in that area!!!! Cornel
