No wonder that the population of Czernowitz welcomed the Emperor,
during the war the Russian army had sacked the city, caused fire and famine
and much suffering. My parents spoke often about that time. My mother's
family "gingen auf die Flucht" (fled) to Budapest and my father's family,
not having relatives in more peaceful locations, stayed and suffered.
