RE: [Cz-L] Deciphering German script

Regrettably, I have been very pre-occupied with some personal matters, but I
do have - as I have written before - a collection of about 250 letters and
postcards in German, mostly between my parents who escaped to Toronto in
1939, and their parents who remained in Czernowitz until they escaped (via
Constanta on the Vitorul to Constantinople. My grandfather wrote in script.
I would obviously love to have it all translated - which might involve a
group of very kind people taking on manageable sections of the
correspondence.

The correspondence is interesting because it details some hair-raising
experiences, AND my father's efforts to start a business during the war (My
parents' visas were granted despite their being Jewish, because they had
money, and had committed to starting a business and hiring - at the time
they got the visas, the country was still in the grip of the depression.).
At that time Canadian bankers were generally openly anit-semitic, and credit
was hard to come by. It may be that the business stuff is an under-explored
area.

I look forward to hearing from you as a group or individually. If it would
be possible to collect a group of translators, I would think that huge
amounts of unread materials could be brought to light. Researchers at
universities won't open boxes unless the stuff is on topic for the subject
of their inquiries.

Mimi's comments about the preservation of documents are crucial. There are
many willing and helpful repositories. The USHolocaust Muesum, Yad Vashem,
and also Leo Baeck Instittute which deals with German-speaking Jews and is a
very good institution. If anyone is interested in donating documents or
copies of documents, you might write to the archivist at Leo Baeck for
advice: Frank Mecklenburg, frank mecklenburg <frankmecklenburg_at_yahoo.com>.
It would be so helpful for future researchers if our Czernowitz documents
stayed together in one repository, but in the internet era they can always
be assembled from different sources.
