My grandfather migrated from Czernowitz to London in 1908. Eventually, in
1927, he was naturalised British. The naturalisation papers recorded his
country of origin as 'Roumania', even though he regarded himself as Austrian
by origin. He had met and married my grandmother in London. She was Dutch
by origin, but some time in their early married years she needed to travel
abroad and needed a passport. Her nationality, acquired from her husband,
was Roumanian, so presumably she had to deal with the Roumanian Embassy in
London. She was apparently much amused by this as she had never been near
Roumania. The Roumanian passport has not survived. The present day
spelling, Romania, dates from after WW2, by which time Czernowitz was in
Ukraine.
