Thank you David for sending us the URL of the Marlborough Fine Art
Exhibition of works by Avigdor Arikha.

There are two self portraits included in the paintings shown, both from
2001.
One in particular caught my eye, the one named "Self portrait in striped
shirt". If I had to choose any painting or photograph to depict what I think
embodies the essence of a Jewish Czernowitzer of the mid 20th century, this
is the painting I would have picked.
An intelligent man, with a high forehead, wild curly hair and glasses. An
apprehensive, thoughtful face, but one with laughter wrinkles around his
mouth. My father could have been his same minded twin.
 
The other self-portrait, "Comical Self-portrait" compliments the first one.
