Shula=2C I loved your essay! I recently joined the Czernowitz group as well=
. I have not heard from anyone yet=2C as I suppose my grandparents' names a=
ren't familiar to anyone. I also grew up with folks who didn't really want=
to talk about the past. I knew that they had "come from" Czernowitz=2C in =
around 1905 or so=2C and I remember hearing my grandfather say the words "B=
ucovina" and "Carpathian Mountains"=2C but that was all! Being at the time=
a child=2C I wasn't really all that interested in asking questions about t=
heir past. As I child=2C I couldn't imagine that they even HAD a past!!

My husband and I were recently in Cernivtsi for only a few days. It was dif=
ficult=2C because we didn't really know what to look for. We did get to the=
State Archive=2C where I was told to write down the information I was look=
ing for and they would get back to me if they found anything. Naturally=2C =
I didn't really expect to hear anything=2C and I haven't.

It is a beautiful city...or=2C I should say=2C you can still see how beauti=
ful it once was. But my frustration remains. It seems I may never know the =
names of my great-grandparents. Ironically=2C several of THEIR grandchildre=
n are still alive=2C but nobody seems to know=2C or remember=2C what the na=
mes were.
