A little back:
When the Soviets took control of Russia , Bessarabia was part of Rumania.
To express their liberalism they created a Moldovan autonomous
region east of the Dniester with Tiraspol as capital . The Rumanians were
a minority, the slavs - Ukrainean and Russian were dominating
the cyril alphabet introduced , all this until 1940 when the Soviets
swallowed Bessarabia.

The Soviets started to change borders : the Black sea coast strip
( Akerman - Cetatea Alba) was allocated
to Ukraina and bordering the Danube made Ukr. a Danube Union state.
    Hotin became Ukraina.
Instead , the Moldovan SSR got the Transnistria region which had only
a
   minority rumanian population.
Under Muscovite rule all this had little meaning but then in 1989 came
independence and people had their say.
The fresh Moldovian state abolished the cyril alphabeth and oriented
with homeland Rumania even intended unity.

The Slavs of the over the Dniester regions got the creeps.
With a great military presence commanded by russians they broke away
and there was a military conflict won by the russian tank divisions.
This is in very broad terms and not strictly historical , the story.
To complicate matters ,the Transnistria entity also holds some
localities on the west side of the Dniester like the town of Bender and
more.
