Thank you Hardy, for all the beautiful photos. Although I never actually
lived in Czernowitz, being born after the war, I always feel a kind of
nostalgia when I see the now rather familiar streets and buildings, and
wish I was there. Maybe also because of the stories my mother used
to tell me, how life before 1940 was so good for her and her family, and
how poor and rich shared the same simple pleasures, like hikes on the
Cecina in the summer, or skiing in winter, going swimming in the Pruth,
and/or discovering the picturesque surroundings of the Bukovina. with
its lush nature.
It is wonderful and interesting to be able to see all the streets in
Czernowitz navigating with the Yandex map. On the street where my
grand-parents lived, St. Nikolausgasse/now Sadovsky, nr. 9, next to it
one can see the small Korn synagogue which is being restored from top to
bottom. Not ready yet, but hopefully this year.
We know personally Peter Ruzicka who wrote the opera "Celan" and saw it
in Bremen. Ruzicka is a German composer, who had met Celan in his later
years in Paris. He was the manager of the Hamburg Opera House and of the
Salzburg Festival. The opera was a very impressive production
(direction Vera Nemirova) and was also shown last summer in Bukarest.
Maybe one day it will be shown in Israel.
