I've often told about the trouble i have explaining my whereabouts.
Hearing me speak Rumanian, which I still do fluently, a Rumanian is
certainly puzzled by my accent and will ask when and how and why did I ever
learn this language because I certainly don't come from there!.
Speaking German, well...here I don't need to elaborate, people try to guess
do I come from Slovakia, Hungary maybe, and in the best case Bavaria( a real
Bavarian, hearing this, would kill me!).
It's only another Czernowitzer who would know, identify and finally be sure!

Identities: In 2000 when I was on a three months artist residency in
Vienna, almost invariably when I told people that I was born in
Czernowitz, the reply was, Oh, but your one of us, you're Austrian. I
who all my life had told people that I was born in Romania, had to
make an identity adjustment when I traveled to CZ the first time in
'96...now I'm less sure what to say...though it's rarely a one word
answer, On my U.S, passport it continues to say Romania
