The statue of Kaiser Franz Joseph which was put up in Chernivtsi
recently, was a present from Arseniy Petrovych Yatsenyuk when he ran for the post
of president of Ukraine. He was born in Chernivtsi and is rumored to
be at least partially Jewish. I do not know whether being Jewish or rumored to be
Jewish, has anything to do with liking the Austrian rule. But he certainly
thought the city would be pleased to receive this present.
Come to think of it, not only the jews were better off under the kaiser,
the Ukrainians were also better off than under Romanian or Soviet rule.
