This afternoon I looked through my old diary of 1996, the summer in =
which we visited Czernowitz. It was a bus tour which started out from =
Frankfurt , through Austria and finally reached our destination, the =
city of my birth.

We had a wonderful tour guide named Anna. She got married to a German =
bus driver and they two became the =93Ukraina Tours=94, arranging =
several visits from Germany to the Bucovina all throughout the year.

I remember asking Anna, who was born in Czernowitz, how she liked living =
in Germany, where they built their home. I remember what she told me:

=93I=92d much rather live in Czernowitz, she said, here life is a =
never-ending adventure. You are pleasantly surprised when things work, =
like the hot water in the bathroom, like when you find the shoes you =
wanted in your size, or when I get rooms in the hotel which I reserved =
for my tourists ,which doesn=92t happen always! One gets up in the =
morning and one prays to God that everything should work as planned, =
while in Germany=85everything works so well, there are no surprises, you =
just push a button and all happens as you know it will! No, no, truth is =
that life in Czernowitz is much more exciting!=94

I am still in touch with Anna. She divorced her German husband and is =
still a successful tour guide in Czernowitz.
