Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth and say I agree with Mimi about the
clearing. Speaking as a member, and the oldest one, of the original
volunteer group in 2008, that is pretty much the way we operated. The
younger members (everyone but me!) cut and hauled off the larger branches
and brush. I worked at a slower pace, sometimes with some others when they
were tired, and sat at an individual grave and, very meditatively, cut
smaller branches and vines from around the graves. There is definitely a job
for anyone who wants to participate. I just hope people realize what they
are getting into and have bug spray and lightweight clothes. It gets hot!!

Bravo for the people in their 70's who are volunteering. At 58, I was
definitely the elder of the group, but those folks are going to put me to
shame.

Just a note to newer members. I signed up because of my Jewish heritage and
because I knew I had some family relationship to the city. I didn't realize
until later that my own great grandparents are buried in the cemetery, and
that my grandmother and my mother's older sister grew up in Cz. I did find
their graves, on the very last day, with the help of my very kind and
persistent co-volunteers, who knew I had tried, and who offered to help me.
So thru the trees and vines and stinging nettles we went.

By the way, although I was the only Jewish volunteer, everyone in the group
was very committed to the project. One woman, from Australia, is now
pursuing Jewish studies, and learning Yiddish. Another, from Germany, did
her master's thesis on the cemetery.
