Mimi...Firstly,not everybody went to the ghetto. Secondly," By their local
neighbours " is going to annoy the people who are doing this memorial...and
I do not know of any Czernowitzers being murdered by their neighbours. We
cannot use definitive numbers because there are no definitive records..just
saying " many thousands" would fit better. Cornel

Subject: [Cz-L] Another suggested inscription for the memorial
Some more thinking and reading, led me to write a slightly
different inscription, copied below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To the memory of the 55 000 Jewish inhabitants of this city,
who on October 11th 1941, at the command of the Romanian
Fascist government of Marshal Ion Antonescu, were imprisoned
in a ghetto on the pain of death.
To the memory of the 33 000 Jewish inhabitants of this city and
its surroundings, deported to Transnistria in the years 1941-1942.
To the memory of the 15 000 Jewish inhabitants of this city and
its surroundings, who in Transnistria and on the way there,
were brutally murdered, or allowed to die of hunger, exposure,
disease and neglect.
To the memory of the more than 3000 Jewish inhabitants
of this city and its vicinity, murdered in 1941, by German
and Romanian troops and by their local neighbors.
May they be remembered for all eternity.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please suggest changes or write your own suggested inscriptions
As you think best.
Please also check my numbers.
