Thank you Jordan for drawing our attention to this new development.
We, as former citizens of Romania, which confiscated our properties,
and because these properties are now in the Ukraine, are in a special
category.
I do not know what the Ukraine has done about properties which were
confiscated
under Soviet rule. We, who's properties were first confiscated by the
Romanians,
then passed on to the Soviet government, are a subgroup of the
general Ukrainian
property owners and therefore I think that before we raise our hopes,
we need
to know the answer to the restitution of properties in the Ukraine in
general.
In Czernowitz, as you all know, the question of communal property,
has not been
answered either. The Jewish house does not belong to the Jews, the
German house
does not belong to the Germans and the Romanian house does not belong to
the Romanians. The "Leichenhalle" is becoming more dilapidated every
time I see it
and the "Tempel" is still a movie theatre.
I, for one, have all the documents to claim my grandparent's property;
ownership documents, the will of my grandmother, etc. I would be
willing to give
all this property up, if our communal property would be restored and
the cemetery
properly maintained.
All who's family had real estate property in Czernowitz and vicinity,
please tell us
your opinion and attitude on this issue.
