Hardy... if I recall correctly, I put the 'sitemap' on the home page in
2005 for the benefit of the search engines' web-crawlers, as in those
days, they didn't deal well with 'frames' (the construct that keeps the
Menu always in view while the content frame changes). It is not
up-to-date, and so there's lots of content you can't get to that way.
In the 'sitemap' sometimes you end up on a page, but most of the time
you end up in a directory. Not really meant for humans, but it worked to
get the googlebots into the content part of the website. The bots are
much smarter now and don't need that help anymore.
You're right... the sitemap links are sort of like the 'chapters' of the
website -- just a way of organizing the content in a more or less
consistent manner. This also is a 'left over' from the very early days
of the website when I was running the webserver out of my house.
