Mimi,
How can you argue that "none of us learned German in school" ? What about
the Meisler school ? what about Comenius ?
I attended the "Safah Ivriyah" school and therefore learned Hebrew, but most
of my friends learned German.
To say "none of us" is in my view somewhat exaggerated.

Subject: [Cz-L] German language

Recently the subject of knowing German and German literature,
came up in our discussions. Since all of us, "real Czernowitzers",
were born after Czernowitz became Cernauti, none of us
learned German in school.

Yet most of us not only speak and understand German,
we also are familiar with German literature and poetry.
It must have been the generation of our parents, which was
so steeped in German literature and poetry, that they
transmitted it to us.
Except for a few hours of being taught to read, I never
was taught German, but most of the books I read till age 12,
were German books and in the conversations of the adults,
allusions and references to German poetry, were often repeated.

Mimi
