The number of graves in the Jewish cemetery of Czernowitz/Chernivtsi
is variously mentioned as being 50 000. I do not know on what evidence
this number is based. The cemetery has been in use for over 140 years.
If we estimate the Jewish population, during this period, on average,
to have numbered 23 000 and the average life-span to have been 65,
then about 350 people would have died each year and the total number
of those who died in 140 years, would be 49 000.

Another way of estimating the number of graves, is by considering
the size of the cemetery. The size of the cemetery is 11.6 hectare,
which are 116 000 square meter. If we deduct 15% of the total area
for paths,
there are 98 600 square meter left. Assuming that each grave
occupies an area of 2 square meter, it follows that there are 49 300
graves.

Based on the burial registers, Bruce Reisch may have a more accurate
idea
of the number of graves.
