I too have been told that it was a Rav Kofmanski initiative....and I applaud
it to the echo!! It is simple, straight forward and has a powerful message
.I do NOT think we should be involved with this except to say "Well Done!"

Subject: [Cz-L] Memorial to the Czernowitz Ghetto
About a week ago, Hardy sent us photographs of the new memorial to the
Czernowitz Ghetto, at the former site of the Turkish fountain.
I am curious to know how most of you felt and what you thought about this
memorial, I was also curious to find out on who's initiative this memorial
was put up.
I have been told on good authority that the initiative came from Rabbi
Kofmanski and that this memorial is temporary.
Apparently at the meeting of the executive committee of the city council,
there was a stormy debate about the inscription. I know no other details.
I do not know whether we should get involved in this issue and if we do get
involved, what our stand should be.

Personally, I do not like this memorial. My reasons are:
If there is to be a memorial, it ought to be to all who were killed in
Czernowitz and vicinity in the summer of 1941, to all who were deported to
Transnistria in 1941 and 1942, to those who died there and all who were
locked up in the ghetto and lost all their civil rights.
I also do not like, that the memorial plaque is on the ground, where it will
be splashed by mud and snow. It ought to be vertical and at eye-level.
The Czernowitz-List, probably includes a larger number of Czernowitz
survivors, than any group or organization. But we do not live in Chernivtsi
and are not part of the Jewish community there.
I think that if we decide to get involved, we should first be absolutely
certain of the background and facts pertaining to this matter and get the
advice and consent of sensible people in the Jewish community there.
Please consider the matter and send your opinion to the list.
