Indeed sad & disappointing! - sending reproductions of some of the panels to
newspapers & TV in Europe & USA with the story about this effort would
likely be more effective than reproducing the exhibit once again and trying
to have round the clock guard who might be bopped over the head for his
effort. Many Romanians are progressive, many are not - this vandalism is
likely the work of a group of hooligans who want to show their power.
Remembering my travels in Romania during the 1990s - one afternoon I was in
a gallery in Timisoara - modern art, handsome people - we were drinking wine
and having a cross lingual conversation - Romanian/Italian/Spanish - a lot
of talk about the problems that Romania was going through at the time - I
zoned out for a little while - and suddenly came to as I heard the gallery
owner saying that the salvation of Romania would be the return of Codreanu
and the Iron Guard! - I was shocked and my friend Sorin who brought me there
protested, calling attention to Codreanu's fascism and the violence and
pogroms he perpetrated against Jews - but the gallery own either didn't
know or didn't want to know of those things - he saw in Codreanu the brave
and shining romantic figure who could save the country....ended the evening
on a sad & disappointing note.....
best to all
