As far as I know there are two monuments to the Jewish residents of
Czernowitz who were murdered by Romanian and German troops in July 1941.

One monument is in the cemetery and is inscribed in both Yiddish and either
Russian , or Ukrainian, saying that in this location lie the remains of 900
people murdered by the Fascist murderers.

The other monument is near the Prut and on it is written that in that
location were murdered 400 Jewish people.

The volunteers from SVIT Ukraine who will start their work-camp on August
7th have asked me whether they could also clear the area around the monument
to the victims of one of the massacres, the one near the Prut.
I of course agreed.

It is now slightly over 70 years since the time of the massacres of Jews in
Czernowitz and the whole Bukovina at the beginning of WW2.
Some of the events of that fateful July 1941 are not clear to me. Nor do I
know where all the mass graves of the victims are located. We ought to take
care of all of them.

Radu Ioanid, in "The Holocaust in Romania" writes, page 101:

----------------------------------------------------
...One of the largest slaughters took place that day (July 5-6) in Cernauti
the capital of Bukovina, where two thousand Jews were killed by Romanian
soldiers working in league with local residents, gendarmes and German
soldiers.

Two mass graves at the Jewish cemetery received 250 corpses each, a third
somewhat fewer.

German troops executed another 400 Jews on July 9, setting fire to the main
synagogue with incendiary grenades.

Further mass killings took place in between July 9 and 12 in Cernauti,
Hotin...
-----------------------------------------------
Radu Ioanid bases these numbers on the "Carta Neagra" by M. Carp.
He does not give an explanation of the discrepancy between the 2000,
he claims were murdered and the approximately 1150, for whose murder he
accounts.

If any of you have accurate information on where and when additional
massacres took place and where the victims were interred, please let me
know.

Mimi
