Reading population censuses of Czernowitz in the last 200 years we
see an increase of the Jewish population far exceeding natural growth.
In this period the population quadrupled and more.
Very few of us can trace Cz ancestors earlier than mid 18 century.
Of course there were Jews much earlier , the early settlers, but
we dont have anyone who can prove a family connection to these .
So we are all newcomers- one, two generations old , rarely more.
Where did they come from:
They came from the North and South , East and West.
First settling in villages and Shtetls ,then moving to Cz.
The villages filled up with fresh newcomers.
A never -ending cycle.
Why Czernowitz ?
In Cz the Jews were a majority for a long time .
This made them feel secure.
The Habsburg rule was benevolent.
They were also commercially sucsessful.
In the East of Europe this was more than you could expect.
