Hi all,
I have been going through lists of synagogues that once existed in New York
City from about 1865 to the 1930s.
I just wanted you to know of the First Czernowitz American Congregation,
located at 160 East Houston (pronounced "How-stun", with the accent on the
first syllable) Street. The rabbi at the tiime was Joseph Rosenbaum, and the
sexton was Jacob Barth. This synagogue is listed in the 1915-16 city
directory.
On the earlier list in my possession, i.e. 1910-11 directory, the synagogue
wasn't listed, though that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't exist. On the
next list I have, i.e. from 1920-1, the synagogue is not listed either.
Regards,
Steven Lasky
