It's you who started the food subject so I'll allow myself to add something.
It really could (and still can) be very cold in Czernowitz. From my
experience I can tell that on those cold days the space between the double
windows was padded with cotton wool, and "Tiegel mit Gaenseschmalz gemischt
mit Grieven und geroesten Zwiebel" (Glass jars containing molten Goose fat
mixed with "Grieven" and fried onions ) were kept there. Not something for
weight watchers but on a slice of rye bread on whose crust garlic was rubbed
it was.... what can I say without exaggerating - something.
