Hello all --

A recent article (Sunday, August 7, in the Bay Area News Group
newspaper) may be a valuable search resource for those of us seeking
word of children separated from their families during WWII. The headline
reads: "The search for children displaced by Holocaust" and it was
written by Sharon Cohen of the Associated Press. It includes photos of
child survivors of the Holocaust "photographed by social service
agencies across Europe soon after World War II. There are more than
1,100 pictures...." The article tells the stories of a handful who have
been located.

"More than 65 years later, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is
reaching out around the world to find the people in these extraordinary
photos. It has posted their pictures online and spread the word the
search is on. The plan is to preserve their stories, fill in some gaps
of history -- and then have them step before the camera once again."

The photos themselves are moving and say a great deal about what
children experienced and felt after their horrific separation from
family under conditions of war.

These children were the lucky ones who survived, often to be adopted in
other countries, often with Christian families, sometimes fending for
themselves, sometimes sent to concentration camps. This current effort
aims at finding those who are still living, but it may be a way for some
of our Czernowitz members to recognize long lost cousins or
grandchildren or.... Some photos bear the children's names (which may
be adopted names, or which may be their original names) but all the
photos are clear and for those who recognize family traits or specific
faces they may present evidence of survival. And, if as still-living
adults they choose to contact the Holocaust Memorial Museum and tell
their stories then you may be able to make contact with them.
