Dear Czernowitzer,
The details mentioned in this discussion are very interesting.z
Hereby a small additional information mentioned by me some months ago:
On a old map by Sebastian Muenster, from 1628, with the title " =
Landtafel=20
des Ungerlands, Polands/ Reussen/ Littaw/ Walachay und Bulgarey ",=20
Czernowitz is mentioned as " ZERWONE ".
Shana Tova, Gmar Tov, Chatima Tova.

Czernowitz the origin of the name :
I once encountered a different interpretation of a professor of =
languages
who elaborated like this :
   Czern in not from the obvious slav black but much earlier language
   meaning tree , log.
    Vitz was the old name of the Prut as called by the locals.
   And therefore Chern - na - Vitz means Logs on the Prut.
      To me it makes as much sense as Blackpool.
      The first settlement was the historic Czern on the left bank of =
the
Vitz.
