Two or three days before the Soviets "liberated" us, our apartment was invaded by five or six Vlasovtzy (Ukrainian soldiers in Nazi uniform). "There is a nest of Jews here", they said in Ukrainian. My uncle gave them my aunt's purse and convinced them that we were not Jewish because there were German books on the shelves. They believed him except they pointed at me and insisted that I was Jewish.

My mother somehow managed to push me out the door. I was twelve years old. To this day I cannot remember where I went or how I came back.

Gaby, you were there? I thought you are too young!
I was there too.
The day the Russians entered Czernowitz, was March 28th.
It was a beautiful sunny day, after what I remember as a long
grey early spring. The soldiers threw candy to the children,
as the trucks drove up the Siebenburger Strasse.
The two historical events which pleased me most during
my early childhood, were the liberation of Czernowitz and
the united Nations decision on the partition of Palestine in Nov. 1947.

May our grandchildren and their children be spared,
what we experienced in our childhood.

Hag sameach,

Mimi
