In 1945-46 all the Jews left Czernowitz.
Almost all.
It was not an organized Exodus , it came naturally.
The Soviets lifted the Iron Curtain for Bukovina Jews
for a limited time for reasons not so clear .
We had no regrets.
We hated all that surrounded us:
The Russians, Ukraineans , Rumanians.
The newspapers we couldnt read, the radio we didnt understand.
The songs we sang with passion but didnt know the meaning.
The fear of the Bandera gangs, the NKWD .
The end of Cz Jewry began 4 years earlier ,on October 11, 1941.
This was the finale.
We took our belongings ,our memories and boarded that army truck
that took us to the border crossing to an uncertain future.
No regrets , no nostalgia , no memories.
Then , later, much later it all came back !
The childhood, the scents, the street, the tunes....
Where have they been all this time ?
