Recent new information has led to the following family connections:

We have been trying to find Rebeka Rubel Gunzer. This all began recently with the discovery of an article published in 1978 in the Jewish Chronicle of London. This article states a "Rebeka Rubel Gunzer" of Israel is seeking information on the location of her Aunt, "Erika daughter of Philipp Rubel, who left Vienna in 1939."

Erika Rubel is the daughter of Philipp Rubel, who was Sossie and Josef Rubel's brother (Josef was my great grandfather and all three were born in Cz). She came to the US in 1939 and stayed with her cousin Helen's family (Josef's daughter). We surmise the only way Erika would have a niece was if she had siblings. But......... we know of none.

We only know of a single child that Philipp and Sabine Rubel had - Erika. It is our belief that Philipp, Erika's father, may have been married twice. First clue, Erika's emigration application lists a William Schmucker as her uncle. Digging a bit, we found a marriage record for an Ester Rosa Schmucker and Feiwisch Rubel in Vienna (1903). (we know Philipp's birth name was Feibisch, with a "B"!) More research revealed that Ester's parents (Moriz and Anna) died at the same address as that listed for Philipp, 1090 Porzellangasse 60 in Vienna. Too many coincidences not to be related. It looks like they had children before she died in 1920. We believe one of them may have been Rebeka. Rebeka was married to Bernard Gunzer (1900-1986).

We now also now think that she has a connection with Maximilien "Kubi" Rubel, who was a prominent Marxist scholar and writer also born in Cz. Based on the marriage date of Ester and Feiwisch Rubel above, 1903, and adding vital information on Maxilmilien (1905-1996), we surmise she was born in about 1904. I do not know if she is still alive. In "The Archives of Maximilien Rubel" there is a mention of a Jakob Rubel, (1911-1973) which could be a third sibling. My cousin thinks Rebeka may have been known as "Roiter" because of her hair color.

Ester died in 1920 after 17 years of marriage. It is possible that she had children during this time, perhaps half-siblings of Erika. Sometime after, Philipp marries again to Sabine and Erika is born in 1922. It is not known if Ester and Sabine were sisters or related.

Do any of you know of these people? There are several Rubels in Israel in a place called Ashkelon and there is also an Alexander Gunzer, coincidentally in Ashkelon as well. Is he perhaps related to Rebeka or just another coincidence! What do you think?
