Czernowitzers...

Don't miss the 18-pages anniversary edition - No. 500 - of "Der Tag", released 78 years ago today, on 26.11.1933/2011, available for you at:

The famous Alfred Kittner reports (p. 10) on a unique Chassidic wedding ceremony, which took place in Czernowitz. This wedding attracted even worldwide attention, as we learn from the New York JTA Jewish News Archive, which reported on 28.11.1933 as follows:

"Czernowitz, Roumania, Nov. 27 (JTA) Ten thousand "Chassidim", members of the mystic Jewish sect which believes in worshipping God with joy, today witnessed the picturesque wedding ceremonies during which Rose Leiser, 21-year-old daughter of the Brooklyn, N. Y., rabbi, Itzchok Leiser, was married to the 23-year-old son of the famous Nadwerner Rabbi, Meyer Rosenbaum. The wedding celebration will last several days and will be an occasion for magnificent feasts, at which all the poor of the countryside will be entertained and fed. The marriage was arranged between the two rabbis during a trip to Roumania which Rabbi Leiser took about one year ago. The couple, however, met before the ceremony. [...] Members of the sect from all parts of Europe and even a contingent of American Chassidim, who accompanied the bride and her parents, flocked to Czernowitz for the wedding. Famous Chassidic rabbis from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Austria and France, with their families, are also present. Rabbi Leiser and the bridal party left the United States for Roumania, about a month ago. They sailed on the French liner Paris. Before they left, American followers of the Brooklyn "Gooter Yid" gave a party to celebrate the coming marriage. [...]"

Alfred Kittner reports on 1,400 wedding guests, JTA on "ten thousand", however, it was for sure a major event for "our" Czernowitzer ancestors, but the other priceless cultural event, was the appearance on stage of theater greats, as

- Max Reinhardt's Drama Group
- Jasha Jushny, performing "Der blaue Vogel"
- Dela Lipinskaja

and others, as we learn from "Der Tag", (pp. 2, 3, 17), illustrated at our Ehpes.com Blog:

What else are you going to discover in the anniversary edition of "Der Tag"? Please check for instance for

- Rose Ausländer's poem "New York" on page 7,
- Malech Abraham's suicide, "Nach Palästina - oder in den Tod", on page 9,
- Edmond Demaitre's essay "Wie die hitleristische Propaganda arbeitet" on page 12,

etc., etc... Enjoy the reading!
