Yesterday Steve Lasky wrote, "I have placed online within my Czernowitz Photographic Studios page a studio photograph of Philipp Fleiss (from Bojan)..."

First, thank you, Steve, for the wonderful photographs and information about the Czernowitz studios. I'm sure this information will be helpful to many Czernowitz family researchers, myself included.

I did want to mention a couple of items about the photographs:
>From the studio of Teodozy Bahrynowicz, the backside of the photo of Mina Grohs is a typical graphic from the earlier Art Nouveau period rather than the Art Deco period which didn't become a formalized style until the 1925 Paris exposition. The "medals" on the back of the photo were also quite commonly used by photographers throughout Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe and Russia. While they don't reveal a lot about the photographer, they did serve as a marketing device to lend credibility to the prestige of the photographer much the same way as an endorsement by Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, does today for British products.

Likewise, from the studio of H. Ehrlich, the photograph of Rose Auslander has a wonderfully rendered Arts and Crafts style pattern following the style of the Viennese form of that artistic movement.

Best to all,
Ava Cohn
