I received today an inquiry about the location of a specific grave
in the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery. The writer wrote me
that when he visited Czernowitz last year, two men who were waiting
for just such visitors, offered to find the grave this man was looking for,
if he would pay them $100. He refused. Very rightly so, in my opinion.
To anyone going to the Czernowitz/Chernivtsi Jewish cemetery, to look for
specific graves:
Before you go:
1. copy the official cemetery map available on Ehpes
or on the picasa web-album "Czernowitz cemetery maps "
accessible at:
2. Access: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/
to find the location of the grave.
According to my latest information, the whole northern part of the cemetery,
to the right of the main path from the entrance on Zelena street, is
currently cleared of all perennial vegetation and the southern part,
to the left of the main path, should also be completely cleared by the
spring of 2012.
