Lucca wrote a little story last September about her sciatica and how they tried to help her but it didn't help.  There was always a bit of humor in her stories, even when the subject was serious or sad.  A bit later she wrote about the discovery that she had diabetes, a surprise.  A bit later a discovery of more.  It all seemed to come down like a storm, rather quickly. When my messages to her started bouncing back because her mail box was full, I feared the worst.

Hardy called her and they told him she'd just come back from the hospital and it sounded serious.  Somebody else called and actually talked to her. They said she sounded very weak.

I'm an unrealistic optimist.  I counted on a recovery.  Later I counted on a miracle.  It didn't happen.  This afternoon when I saw the name Lucca in my inbox I thought she had recovered. But it was from Sharon, her daughter, with the sad news.

My school chum from Scoala Elite, Hans Noe, Dr. Noe's son, had come out and settled in New York after the war.  He said once, "Dying is easy.  Losing loved ones is hard." Of course, the longer we live, the more of them we lose, and it's hard.

I'm so glad that after some correspondence I got a chance to meet her in 07 when I took a tour of Israel.  As it happened, I had one night in Haifa and stayed at a hotel just down the street from the Towers.  She came over and we sat in the lobby and talked.  I walked her home. I found out that her daughter lives near my daughter in North County of San Diego. We talked about maybe both visiting our daughters at the same time some day and introducing the girls and having some sort of Czernowitzer reunion.

I very seldom drink, even wine.  Today, though, I had a big, stiff drink of whisky.
I'm going to miss her very much.

Andy
