Czernowitzers...
>From "today's" edition of "Der Tag", i. e. 22.05.1934/2012, p. 2, we learn, that Dr. Fritz Gebhard Schellhorn took office as German Consul in Czernowitz on 17.05.1934. That's an excellent opportunity to draw your attention to the fact, that - following the German version - I have released the article
"Consul general Dr. Dr. Fritz Gebhard Schellhorn - At the same time an essay on the history of the Jews in Czernowitz 1940-1943"
by Dr. Hartwig Cremers - translated from the German by Carolin Roder - at our Ehpes.com Blog and at my Czernowitz Blog as well:

The publication of the German version of the article in December 2011 incited a controversial debate on the impetus of the German Consul General in Czernowitz. In order to avoid from the start any misunderstanding, the current release of the English version of the article does in no way affect the
UNIQUE MERITS OF DR. TRAIAN POPOVICI IN IMPLEMENTING THE RESCUE OPERATION OF THE CZERNOWITZ JEWS
but it demonstrates, that additional factors might have played a role too in leading the rescue operation to a success. At the same time I must admit, that in the course of my researches over the last months, I've got doubts about the contribution of Dr. Fritz Gebhard Schellhorn, not as much as concerning his indisputable actions themselves, but with respect to his motivation. My scepsis is based on newly discovered documents, as f. i. the 1942 investigation report released by Liviu Carare:

But from the scientific point of view, Dr. Hartwig Cremers' article is significant for the understanding of the events in Czernowitz in 1940 - 1943. Personally I come to the conclusion, that rescue operation of the Czernowitz Jews was in fact a joint venture, but as distinct from economic ones, A UNCOORDINATED JOINT VENTURE. Therefore please read and judge by yourself the question of credibility! In any case the author, Dr. Hartwig Cremers, and I, both of us would be more than pleased to receive any testimony on the role, played by Dr. Fritz Gebhard Schellhorn as German Consul (General) in Czernowitz.
