Except Penes himself without an arm etc. I had to recite this
patriotic poem in 1939 at the end of the 4th grade - looked it up
again now, it ends with,

Ah! da-o-ar domnul să-mi îndrept
Această mână ruptă,
Să-mi vindec rănile din piept,
Iar să mă-ntorc la luptă,
Căci nu-i mai scump nimică azi
Pe lumea pământească
Decât un nume de viteaz
Şi moartea vitejească!

Makes sense to the first person recitation that he himself did not die.
Even Vasile Alexandri had not the heart to kill him in battle!
