There are very few photographs taken in Czernowitz between
the summer of 1940 and the summer of 1945. During the first
Soviet occupation, it was impossible to buy photographic film.
When we went to the ghetto in October 1941, people had more essential
items to take with them than their photographic cameras.
While we were in the ghetto, the Romanians who moved into our houses
and apartments, stole our clothing, furniture and our cameras.
Then the Soviets returned and nobody had a camera or photographic film.
