Czernowitzers... this interesting email turned up this morning. If
anyone in the NYC area is planning to attend, a report to our group would be
in order.

The Jewish Genealogical Society invites you to attend its next
meeting, featuring a lecture by Dr. Hubert Steiner, on
"Researching and Restitution in the Austrian State Archives."

Date and Place:
Sunday, January 15, 2012, 2:00 pm
Center for Jewish History
15 West 16th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues
New York, NY

Program:
On April 26, 1938, shortly after the Nazi annexation of Austria,
a regulation on the declaration of Jewish property was enacted.
The consequent property registrations were the first steps in
the systematic theft of Jewish property, a program that was
documented in files that still exist and may be used not only
for studying economic and political history but also for
genealogical research. These files, which contain many personal
biographies, including stories of escape and new lives in exile,
can now be viewed in the Austrian State Archives.

Since 1990, Dr. Hubert Steiner has been responsible for the
identification of the properties confiscated by the Nazi regime
from Austrian Jews. Working in the Austrian State Archives, Dr.
Steiner created the finding aid that has made it possible to
search property lists that all Jews in Vienna were forced to
submit in 1938. Dr. Steiner's work has been widely
recognized, most recently in 2010 with the Grand Silver
Honorary Medal for merits from the county of Vienna.

This meeting will be of special interest to anyone whose family
lived within the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire,
including Austria, Hungary and Galicia.

The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the CJH will be
open at 11:00 AM for networking with other researchers and
access to research materials and computers.

The program is free to members of JGSNY; there is a $5 charge
for guests.
