Karolina Kotziura, from Poland, who has twice been a volunteer with SVIT
Ukraine, when they worked at the cemetery to clear it of weedy vegetation,
is now preparing a Brochure about the Jewish Cemetery of Czernowitz.
She has asked my help in ascertaining the facts about the three mass graves
to be found at the cemetery. My knowledge of these facts is incomplete at
best and I hope some of you can answer the following questions.
1. Is the Romanian mass grave at the southern edge of the cemetery, the
grave of Romanians who were killed by Soviet troops when they occupied
Czernowitz in June 1940? And why were they buried there?
2. Is the mass grave of the Turkish soldiers, really the grave of Moslem
Austrian soldiers killed during WW1?
3. The mass grave of the 900 Jewish people in the cemetery:
I believe that about 700 Jews were murdered in Czernowitz on the night
of July 5th - 6th by Romanian soldiers and gendarms and 500 hundred
of them were brought to the cemetery. On July 9th another 400 were
murdered by German soldiers and later also brought to the cemetery.
Were some of those killed, buried at another location?
Please if any of you know of reliable sources from which I can get detailed
data, particularly about the murder of Jews during the Holocaust, but also
about the Romanian and Turkish mass graves, please send it to me.
I will be very grateful for any information.
Sorry to bring up this painful subject,
Mimi
